1. Configuration Guide for Devices


This setup guide is for users who did not purchase the Grandstream UCM6202 from WIN-911


If you did purchase the UCM from WIN-911 the setup process is simpler and can be found in a different article.


The Grandstream UCM6202 VoIP PBX uses analog phone lines to place and receive phone calls. Since the device supports SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), it can be used by WIN-911 as an alternative to TAPI modems anywhere analog phone lines are available to make phone calls. The purpose of this document is to guide you through the initial setup of the UCM6202 for use with WIN-911 Interactive and Advanced. If you have previously configured the UCM6202, we recommended restoring factory settings so you can follow along. 


Requirement: You must be running WIN-911 3.19.9 with the Voice Service Pack 1 to use the Grandstream UCM6202. 


WIN-911 interfaces with the UCM using a VoIP connection, the UCM then routes the call to the attached analog line(s). The UCM6202 supports up to two analog lines allowing WIN-911 to handle up to two calls simultaneously. The UCM device must be on the same subnet as WIN-911 and does not require an internet connection. 




Connecting the UCM6202



  1. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable into the WAN port of the UCM6202.
  2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into the uplink port of an Ethernet switch/hub. 
  3. Connect the 12V DC power adapter into the 12V DC power jack on the back of the UCM6202. Insert the main plug of the power adapter into an appropriate surge-protected AC power outlet. 
  4. Wait for the UCM6202 to boot up. The front LCD display will show the UCM’s hardware information when the boot process is completed. 
  5. Once the UCM6202 is successfully connected to your network via the WAN port, the Network LED indicator on the front of the device will be lit green, and an IP address will be shown on the LCD display. Take note of the IP address, you will need it to access the Web GUI.
  6. Connect your phone line(s) from the wall jack to the FXO ports. If you only have one phone line, use the FXO1 port. Do NOT use the FXS ports.

A. Accessing the Web GUI

The UCM6202 is configured via a Web GUI. After the UCM has booted, you should have an IP address that can be used to access the Web GUI.


  1. Open a web browser and enter the IP address into the address bar in the following format: https://ipaddress:8089 (The IP address is displayed on the LCD screen of the UCM)
  2. Depending on your browser, you may receive a warning about the security certificate. You can ignore this warning and continue to the website. Here is an example of the warning in IE.

  3.  After the portal loads, enter the default credentials.

    Username: admin
    Password: (see label on the bottom of the device for default password)


  4. You should now be logged into the Web GUI and you can begin configuring the device.

2. UCM6202 Configuration

A Setup Wizard will appear when you log in. If you've logged in previously and dismissed it, a Setup Wizard link is available on the top right of the screen. 



You will be prompted to change the default password. After setting a new password, click



Select the following settings.


  • Method: Switch

The setting for Method allows you to select how the WAN and LAN ports will function on the device, selecting Switch allows access to the UCM from both the WAN and LAN ports.


  • MTU: 1500 (default)


Leave at the default setting. MTU (maximum transmission unit) is the size of the largest protocol data unit (PDU) that can be communicated in a single network-layer transaction. 


  • Preferred DNS Server: optional


If you have a DNS server you'd like to use, you can specify it here. Since we'll be connecting to the UCM with an IP address and not a hostname, it isn't required.


  • IP Method


We suggest setting a static IP address for the UCM as you don't want the IP address to change.


You will need to work with your IT team to arrange a static IP address that can be assigned to the UCM, you may want to provide them the MAC address in case it is needed to create the reservation. After the reservation has been created, they'll be able to provide you with the values for Subnet Mask, Gateway IP and DNS Server 1.


If you select DHCP, the IP address could change once the DHCP lease expires.

Select the appropriate settings for your region and click



You must create a single extension for WIN-911. 


  • Start Extension: 1000


This is the extension WIN-911 will be assigned.


  • Create Number: 1


SIP Password: Select the Use <password> as Password option and specify a password for the extension. You will need this password later when configuring WIN-911.

You must create an analog trunk before you can use the FXO port(s) on the UCM.

  • Trunk Type: Analog Trunks
    Trunk Name: WIN911AnalogTrunk
    Trunk Type: Select your country.
    FXO Port:
     Check the boxes for the FXO ports you are using. If you only have 1 phone line, only select the first box. 
  • Outbound Rule
    Calling Rule Name: WIN911OutboundRule
    Number Prefix: Leave Empty
    Number Length:

Privilege Level: Local


  • Strip: Leave Empty
    Prepend: Leave Empty unless you need to specify a number before dialing through the phone line.
    Inbound Rule

Default Destination: Extension > 1000 (This is the extension you created previously)

Review your settings and click


You will be prompted to reboot the UCM, click OK to reboot.


After the reboot completes, log back in.


You must now change your Outbound Rule.

  • Expand Extension / Trunk on the menu and select Outbound Routes
  • You will have one Outbound Rule named WIN911OutboundRule, click the button on the right to edit it.
  • In the Pattern field, change the value to _X.

    NOTE: The underscore and period characters are required. 

  • Click

  • Click  on the top of the page.


Your UCM is now configured for use with WIN-911. Next, we will configure the Voice Gateway in WIN-911. 


2. WIN-911 Configuration


Open WIN-911 Workspace from the Start menu and navigate to Contact > Voice > Gateway


If this the first time viewing the Gateway settings, you will be in edit mode. If you've made changes to the Gateway previously, you will need to click the  button on the bottom right.


The Gateway settings consist of two tabs, General and Audio, use the instructions below to fill in the information.


A. General Settings

Select SIP/VoIP for Voice Hardware


SIP Account Settings

  • User ID: 1000  (This is the extension you created in the UCM Setup Wizard)
  • Display Name: You can leave this empty as it is not used with the UCM.
  • Enable Registration Required
  • Registration ID: 1000 (This is also the extension you created previously)
  • Password: Enter the extension password you specified in the UCM Setup Wizard.

B. Channel Settings


It may be helpful to think of a channel like a phone line. You need to tell WIN-911 how many channels are available and whether it should allow inbound calls, outbound calls, or both. 


Bi-directional: Channel can be used for both outbound and inbound calls.

Inbound: Channel can only be used for inbound calls. You would use an inbound channel if you want to reserve a phone line for inbound calls only. This will be useful if operators regularly call into WIN-911 to request alarms or reports.

Outbound: Channel can only be used for outbound calls. If you don't want operators to have the ability to call into the system, you can use only outbound channels. 


The number of channels you can specify in WIN-911 is tied to the number of FXO ports that are in use on the UCM. If you attached 2 phone lines, you can use 2 channels. If you attached 1 phone line, you can use 1 channel. It is up to you to decide which channels you'd like to use. 


If you have 1 phone line, we recommend setting 1 Bi-directional channel. If you have 2 phone lines, we recommend setting 1 Outbound channel and 1 Inbound channel.

C. Network Settings


Server Address: Enter the IP address of the UCM6202


Leave the other settings at their default.


D. Audio Settings


Speech Synthesis


Voice Selection: Select the text-to-speech engine WIN-911 will use to generate audio during phone calls. Text-to-speech engines vary depending on the Windows operating system.

Speaking Rate Offset:  Allows you to control the speed of the text-to-speech engine.

Volume: Set the volume level of the text-to-speech engine playback.


Audio


Greeting Message: Custom greeting that will play at the beginning of all phone calls.

Codec: Auto Select


Click the button and return to the General tab. 


E. Configure Phone Call Delay

In some environments, when placing back to back phone calls, it is possible for the UCM6202 to signal WIN-911 that it is ready to accept the next call before it has disconnected from the analog phone line. When this occurs, the next call will fail. We've added a configurable delay that is placed between all phone calls. The delay is configured in the WIN-911 Voice Runtime configuration file. Use the instructions below to add a 10-second delay between calls. 


  • Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\WIN-911 Software\WIN-911 Enterprise\Voice in File Explorer

  • Open WIN911.Notifier.Voice.Runtime.exe.config in Notepad

  • Find the <appSettings> section and paste the following key..

    <add key="CallDelaySeconds" value="10"/>

  • Save the config file and restart the WIN-911 Voice Runtime service


F. Test SIP Settings


Now that the UCM6202 and WIN-911 are set up, return to the WIN-911 Voice Gateway to place a test phone call. 


  • Click thebutton at the bottom of the General tab.
  • Enter a phone number to dial.

  • Click the button and WIN-911 will attempt to place a call. If the UCM accepts the call, a confirmation dialog will appear.

If you can see this message, then you have successfully configured WIN-911 to use the Grandstream UCM6202.
