This guide will walk through the installation and setup of the Multi-Tech's MTC-LVW2 for use with WIN-911 Version 7 to send and receive text messages. It will also go over troubleshooting steps to test modem functionality.
Activation / SIM Card Info
Before configuring WIN-911 to use your modem, you will need to setup a wireless account with cellular provider (e.g. AT&T, Verizon, Rogers) and obtain a Standard SIM card. (Verizon Customers:You will need to provide Verizon with the IMEI # of your modem which can be found on the label affixed to the bottom of the modem.)
WIN-911 will potentially send many text messages so we recommend subscribing to an unlimited texting plan to avoid overage charges. Neither a data nor voice plan is required for use with WIN-911.
It is possible to install the modem ahead of time without a SIM card, but WIN-911 will not function correctly until the SIM card is installed in the modem.
Installing a SIM Card
Once you have your SIM card, you can install it into the modem.
NOTE: You can use a Micro or Nano SIM card but you'll need the appropriate Standard SIM card adapter.
- Locate the SIM card slot on the side of the modem. The slot is labeled SIM.
- Slide a SIM card into the SIM card slot with the contact side facing down as shown.
- When the SIM card is inserted fully, it will lock into place.
- To remove the SIM card, push the card in and it'll eject from the device.
This modem doesn't require much configuration to work with WIN911, the majority of the settings can be done by going to the Configuratior > Global > SMS Definition.
You will need to assign the proper port for your modem, which can be gotten from Device Manager.
The Baud rate must be set to 115200 for any SMS modem you connect to the V7 software.
The LVW2 is a Verizon modem, which will use CDMA and the +CMGF=1;+CMGD=1,4;+CNMI=1;E0, which is the default initialization string.
In some instances users will need to add CNMI=1,1 to the init string instead of CNMI=1
For the MTC-LVW2 modem itself you must run the AT+CPMS="ME","ME";AT+CSMP="" command with a terminal service such as Putty or HyperTerminal if you are unable to acknowlege the alarms.
Use ATE1 to turn echo on so you can see the command you are typing. You will not see what you are typing until this command is entered.
